 - Student leader targeted in Bongaigaon; hostage’s mother appeals to outfit as search continues
Bongaigaon/Dhubri, Sept. 27: A group of youths attacked All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union president Biswajit Ray today at Borpara in Bongaigaon town when he was going to print some documents.
The attackers hit Ray with bamboo sticks and punched blows on his right eye before ransacking his Toyota car bearing registration number AS 01 AX 0084. The incident occurred at 4.15pm. Police reached the spot and took Ray for medical care and interrogated some local people about the incident.
Ray was admitted to a private hospital in Bongaigaon with head injury and may be shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Though nobody knows the actual reason for the attack, a section of Ray supporters said yesterday he had made a comment in support of Bodoland at Kokrajhar in a meeting with BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary. It assumed the rival faction attacked him for this.
Ray told reporters that Khargeswar Chaudhury (of Hiteswar Barman faction of AKRSU) and his group attacked him but he did not say the reason of the attack. All Koch Rajbongshi Mahila Samiti president Purabi Sarkar said Ray was supposed to attend a meeting at Dholapukhuri in Bongaigaon district this afternoon. But all of a sudden, he was attacked by some youths at Borpara.
This evening, Ray’s supporters enforced a bandh in Bongaigaon against the incident. The police has been put on extra alert after the incident to tackle any untoward situation.
When contacted, the general secretary of Biswajit Ray faction of Akrsu, Pradip Ray, said, “We strongly condemn this attack by Hiteshwar Barman faction and will react tomorrow.” Bongaigaon superintendent of police Abhijit Bora, when contacted, said Ray Ray was allegedly attacked by his rival group. “However, till now no FIR has been lodged. After lodging FIR action will be taken against the attackers,” Bora added.
